I was on my way to work at about 6:30 in the morning when I came across this scene. Since I always carry my camera with me, I quickly stopped the car and got out the gear.
I ran about 25 yards to the left side, to get the foreground grasses to work as part of the composition, set the Hasselblad on a tripod and took several spot meter readings of the scene. I had time for only one exposure, as the storm was rapidly headed directly toward me, and the light behind me was changing. I quickly took the photograph!

While spending several months in Vermont and New Hampshire in 1989, I often went out to photograph throughout the surrounding region. As I became more intimately acquainted with the area, I would keep my eye on various forested areas and specific trees and would revisit them under different conditions of lighting and time of day.
Early one morning, the air was calm and a low fog blanketed the valley. I knew that conditions were optimum for a worthwhile photograph, so off I went. Only a few miles from where I was living I came across this tree. The fog was thinning, but it still greatly softened the light from the sun–which appeared as a distinct white disk in the brightly illuminated sky.
To me, this photograph has a really celebratory feeling, with the strong upward thrusting motion of the trunks of the tree rising from the strong base of the lichen-covered glaciated rocks, fairly exploding into the brilliantly colored red-orange leaves. The color and textural contrast between the bright, angular leaves and the cool, soft, pastel fog gives a balanced tension which enhances the sense of depth and place and helps give the image a quiet but powerful feeling of strength and dignity.

BIOGRAPHY
Christopher Burkett was born in 1951 and was reared in the Pacific Northwest. In 1975, while he was a brother in a Christian order, he became interested in photography as a means of expressing the grace, light and beauty he saw present in the world of nature. Over the next twenty years, he gradually perfected his craft so photography could be the means through which he could express his innermost feelings and inspiration. Today he works almost exclusively with color 8 x 10″ transparencies.
In 1979, Burkett left the brotherhood to pursue photography and married his wife, Ruth. He learned the offset printing process and ran four-color printing presses and laser scanners to create detailed color separations. These years of experience in the printing trade helped develop his fine discernment of color and gave him a deep understanding of the principles of color and tone reproduction.
Today Burkett travels extensively throughout the United States to photograph. His masterful printing and numerous exhibitions rapidly brought him international acclaim. His photographs are featured in many public and private fine art collections. Burkett also has taught several workshops sponsored through the Friends of Photography and Anderson Ranch Arts Center.
Burkett is a recognized national expert in printing Cibachrome (Ilfochrome), by virtue of his use of sophisticated and unique masking techniques. He meticulously hand prints his 8 x 10″ transparencies to 20 x 24″, 30 x 40″, and 40 x 50″, with impressive sharpness and rich tonality. All images are archivally overmatted, signed and numbered by the artist.
